For hundreds of chapters Sorachi makes you laugh harder than almost any manga alive — then, without warning, he drops you into some of the most brutal and emotionally devastating arcs in the medium. The joke is that it was always serious. The White Demon was always there.

Why Gintama

  • Sorachi's comedy is genuinely the funniest in manga — the parody is sharp, the timing is perfect, and the absurdist escalations are in a category of their own
  • The Joui War flashbacks and arcs like Yoshiwara, Rakuyou, and Courtesan of a Nation land harder because you spent hundreds of chapters laughing — the contrast is the weapon
  • The ensemble cast is one of manga's greatest — virtually every recurring character gets a full arc, a backstory worth caring about, and a moment that defines them
  • Gintoki himself is one of the medium's finest protagonists: lazy, funny, broken, and capable of something terrifying when the people he loves are threatened
